The Spiral Saxophone Quartet

The Spiral Saxophone Quartet are a lively ensemble who are equally at home on the concert stage and educational music workshop. The group invest a great deal of time and creative energy bringing contemporary classical and other genres of music to new audiences, and believe there should be fewer boundaries between the audience and those who perform for them. After two decades of playing together they are a widely experienced group of performers and educators. The group can provide music for a wide range of events from full concert recitals, workshops and children’s concerts to function music for weddings and parties.

Luiza Lale

Having been awarded a place on the distinguished joint course-double degree programme at the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester, Luiza studied with Rob Buckland. Luiza moved to London to further her studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she completed a Masters degree with Simon Haram. She performed a series of sax and piano works written for her and Tim Watts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the Prince’s Trust, and toured Europe with Berio’s International New Music Ensemble. Luiza plays in some of London’s top party venues as “Organic Jam” where she improvises over DJs, performs and tours with The It Girls music and dance act and has recorded for BBC radio, Capital FM and XFM.


Maria Payne

Maria studied saxophone and clarinet at Junior Trinity before gaining a place at Trinity College of Music where she was a founder member of the Spiral Saxophone Quartet. She later studied with Rob Buckland at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Maria currently teaches saxophone at Henrietta Barnett and Queen Elizabeth's Schools in north London and is the woodwind coach for Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra with whom she has toured Italy. Maria played soprano saxophone in the West End musical ‘Humble Boy’ and has also recorded with ‘The Streets’.

Adam Wilson

After 3 years in the National Youth Wind Orchestra, Adam studied saxophone and flute at Trinity College of Music. He has written and arranged a wide variety of music for saxophone and piano as well as for quartet and large ensembles. Adam has taught saxophone at Canford School, Dorset and Berkhamsted School, Hertfordshire and currently teaches at The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School and The Haberdashers Askes’ School for Girls, Elstree. Adam also examines throughout the UK  and internationally for ABRSM.

Emily Baker

Originally from Somerset, Emily studied saxophone and flute at Trinity College of Music in London. Emily performs with and directs a number of big bands and youth jazz ensembles. She currently teaches saxophone at a number of schools including Dulwich Prep, London. Since completely a Masters degree in Leadership at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2008, Emily has developed the ‘In-Spiral’ workshops and ensembles.
